Information and advice

In order to give you some concrete insight in the different treatments available in a practical manner, we refer to the:

Open information meeting and introduction of the team

The UMR team propose information sessions to the patients, during which the Unit's staff members explain the various techniques and aspects related to your care. During these information meetings each participant has the opportunity to ask questions and to raise matters of concern.  The dates and venue are communicated on this site.

Nurse Counselling

Before starting treatment, your doctor will recommend to attend a counselling meeting, conducted by one of the Unit's nurses. First objective is to help you understand and assume the treatment chosen for you. You will be explained, for example, how and when to use the medication, eventual secondary effects, how the Unit operates…etc.

Second objective is to inform and give the patient the opportunity to exchange views, worries, hopes and expectations. It is strongly recommended that both partners attend the session.

Assessment of resources

We have been offering psychological support for the past ten years, to all couples considering infertility treatment in the Reproductive Medicine Unit of the University Hospital of Lausanne.

During the first medical consultation, the patient's physician will encourage to meet with one of our infertility counsellors. The aim of this encounter is to become acquainted and to take time to talk about emotional aspects of the individual's particular situation and of proposed treatment.

Couples searching for causes and treatment for their infertility are confronted with unexpected stress situations, inherent to the treatment of medically assisted procreation, investigations, diagnosis and decisions to be made concerning the various treatment options. After the treatment, a positive result or a disappointment may occur. All these steps have repercussions on the daily lives of these couples, which may sometimes be difficult to cope with. This is why it is important to discuss beforehand the anticipated difficulties in order to use all personal resources allowing you to live through the period of treatment as serenely as possible.

Our concept of psychological support aims to reinforce the patient's personal resources, which may lay in the communication within the couple, sharing aspects of your situation with friends or family, continuing your hobbies and/or your professional life and/or enhancing the intimacy of your couple.

You may contact us at any moment before, during or after treatment, through the secretaries’ office (021/3143276 Monday to Friday from 9 to 12 am and from 2 to 4 pm).
