Adoption

Some infertile couples initially choose adoption as their way to parenthood, while others choose to try medically assisted procreation (MAP). Couples attempting MAP express the wish to experience a pregnancy and to have a biological link with their child. Some of these couples prefer not to approach the subject of adoption as long as the outcome of their treatment is unknown. Others may be aware of the lengthy procedure of adoption and therefore seek to contact the appropriate authorities in order to start thinking of this different way to become a parent. For couples with this idea, our position is to orient them to the appropriate authorities. We believe that the thinking process couples must go through in order to adopt a child, may open and orient some reflections on what it means to become a parent. This may be undertaken with the adoption team in parallel to MAP, until the couple obtains the authorization to adopt a child. At this point, it is essential that the couple choose between continuing MAP or opting for adoption. The risk of having to welcome an adoptive child at the same time, as a birth must be avoided. Our experience has shown that this situation is too difficult to cope with for a family.

The counsellors of our team are available for any discussions concerning these important subjects and for further practical information.
