In vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET)

IVF is a technique consisting in removing the eggs from the mother’s ovaries (egg retrieval or oocyte pick-up), isolating the oocytes from the oocyte-cumulus complexes and mix them with the partner sperm. After 16-20 hours incubation, zygotes (fertilized oocytes) are identified. One or three zygotes are kept in culture for the fresh transfer. All other zygotes are immediately cryopreserved for later use and in accordance with Swiss law. ET: mostly 2 embrio's are transferred.

Lately, IVF is often associated with other techniques such as ICSI (Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection) or microsurgical sperm recovery from the epididymis (tube that leads from the testis) (MESA) or the testicle (TESE).

Indications: blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, masculine infertility, unexplained infertility and endometrioses.
