Leader :

Dr Geneviève Leuba Gfeller, PhD,  PD & MER

Description :

The unit has a double affiliation with the University Service of Old Age Psychiatry (SUPAA) and has as main research axis, the study of the biological and clinical processes which underlie normal and pathological cerebral aging. Particular interest focuses on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, such as fronto-temporal dementia, but also on cognitive and mood disturbances linked to age.

Research projects :

Normal and pathological cerebral aging

  • Study of anatomo-clinical correlations in physiological cerebral aging (including very advanced ages),  Alzheimer’s disease including certain early onset familial forms
  • Interest for other forms of dementias (e.g. fronto-temporal) and for mood disturbances linked to age
  • Differential aging of certain regions, dorsolateral, ventromedial and cingular of the frontal lobe: qualitative and quantitative immunocytochemical study (image analysis)  - in collaboration with B. Riederer for proteomic studies. Research of  synaptic and cytoskeleton proteins which could be particularly involved in normal aging and  Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cerebral aging of rodents with behavioural correlations : study of certain proteomic and histological parameters in  old rats or transgenic mice with Alzheimer characteristics (collaboration with groups F. Schenk and B. Riederer)
  • See also Summary on Alzheimer’s Disease (pdf-17Ko)

Teaching :

  • Bachelor in Biology, different modules
  • From Mental Activities to Behaviour: States of the Brain (resp. R. Stoop)
  • Introduction to Psychiatric Neurosciences (resp. Fr. Schenk)
  • Psychopharmacology (resp. C. Eap)
  • Master in Biology, specialization Neurosciences :
    Introduction to Psychiatric Neurosciences /
    Cholinergic System, Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Lecture in Psychology (SSP) : diseases of aging (resp. F. Schenk) (pregraduate)
Neurobiology of Cerebral Aging and  Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Lectures for the Center of Education for Specialization in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (CEPUSPP) (postgraduate)
Neurobiology of some Neuropsychiatric Diseases (Dementia,  Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism,  Mood Disturbances)
  • Privat-Docent Lecture : Normal and Pathological Cerebral Aging

Keywords :

Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral aging, immunohistochemistry, cholinergic system
