Reference National Center for Q fever (Coxiella burnetii)

The National Centre for Tick-borne disease is coordinated by R. Gaumann at the Spiez Laboratory and acts as a reference national center for three important pathogens, for which the acting center is located in three different institutions:

  • Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBE) at the Spiez Laboratory, Dr R. Gaumann;
  • Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) at ADMED, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Dr R. Lienhard;
  • Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) at the Institute of Microbiology, CHUV-UNIL, Lausanne, Prof. G. Greub.

In the context of this National Reference Center, the Institute of Microbiology mainly provides the opportunity to test for the presence of C. burnetti by PCR in human and/or veterinary clinical samples as well as anti-Coxiella antibodies in human sera.
