MED.USE : Medical large language model for reducing resource overuse in the emergency department

Université de Lausanne

This project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, aims to foster collaboration between several Swiss hospitals to develop and implement a decision-support system based on a medical language model (LLM).

This system will process routinely available information and provide recommendations to emergency department clinicians, with the goal of reducing low-value care (LVC) while being well adapted to the Swiss context.

The project focuses on three common clinical scenarios with significant potential for reducing LVC: (1) unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for respiratory infections, (2) overuse of CT scans for abdominal pain, and (3) overuse of CT scans for mild head trauma.
