Molecular diagnosis in virology

Classical methods based on cell culture have been superseded by molecular methods based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). As of 2008, the whole spectrum of virology has been transfered to the molecular diagnostic laboratory. Efforts have been made to adapt most viral tests to a standardized format adapted to real-time PCR with an automated setup (Greub et al. 2016). A tool based on the MultiQC software was also implemented for quality monitoring of molecular tests (R. Sahli, 2009 280 Ko).

Human papillomaviruses

The R&D virology laboratory serves as the WHO HPV reference laboratory for Europe, in charge of genotyping, as of 2007. The details of this activity can be found in our Collaborative Research / WHO HPV Reference Laboratory pages.
