Neurosurgery

Our senior staff is responsible for training medicine students, interns, assistant physicians and specialists in neurosurgery. Training is provided in part by senior registrars and associates physicians.

Undergraduate training

Undergraduate training is offered exclusively to 3rd, 4th and 6th year students at the University of Lausanne Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

5th year medical interns spend one month in the service, during which they participate in all its activities: admissions, daily rounds, conferences and surgery. At the end of their internship they are required to make a presentation on a specific aspect of neurosurgery.

The nursing staff is also dedicated to the training of nursing students.

Post-graduate training

Post-graduate training is carried out through the medium of weekly conferences. The different themes of neurosurgery are presented by the executive physicians, senior registrars and guest lecturers. These conferences are conducted in the form of video-conferences with Geneva hospital. Based on the interactive and multidisciplinary discussion of cases, it encourages dynamic exchanges between the two services. Post-graduate training is further strengthened by means of a daily conference where the operations planned for the following day are discussed in the presence of a neuroradiologist. This helps to foster a critical approach to the decision-making process.

Since the beginning of 2009, a weekly lecture on clinical neuroscience has been presented to a group of collaborators from Lausanne and Geneva. Here, various themes around neurology, neurorehabilitation, neuropsychology and neurosurgery are explored.

Further education

The personnel of the service participate, upon invitation, in classes at hospitals in removed areas and regional symposiums.
