Professor Cools' research focuses on the processes of gonadal and tumor development, endocrine care and psychological adaption in children with disorders of sex development (DSD) and on the endocrine care of adolescents with gender identity disorders. Her research is performed on a multidisciplinary basis, in close collaboration with the departments of Pediatric Urology and Genetics, and with the Department of Pathology and the DSD team of the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam (the Netherlands). For her work on gonadal development and tumor risk in DSD patients, Prof. Cools received the ESPE Young Investigator Award in 2010.
Her clinical expertise covers the spectrum of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology. She has extensive experience in the treatment of DSD, gonadal failure and gender identity disorder in children and adolescents. Prof Cools is the coordinator of the multidisciplinary DSD team of the University Hospital Ghent.
