Curriculum Vitae

Background

Prof. Philippe Ryvlin is a full professor at UNIL and head of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DNC) at the CHUV since 1 January 2015. He is also an affiliated professor at the University of Copenhagen. He has completed  a specialist internship in Neurology, a Master's degree in Statistics and Epidemiology, a Master's degree in Genetics and Cytogenetics and a PhD in Neurosciences at the University of Lyon. He continued his career there as a University Professor and Hospital Practitioner in Neurology from 2000, then as Head of Department in 2013. During his career at HCL, he contributed to the development of an epilepsy surgery programme that has become one of the most active in Europe, and co-founded the IDEE Institute (Institut Des ÉpilepsiEs).

A clinician-researcher, Prof Ryvlin developed and co-directed the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Epileptology (TIGER) during his years in Lyon, and set up the Laboratory for the Study of Excitability and Cortical Arousal Disorders (LTE2C) and the NeuroTech research platform at the CHUV and UNIL. His research work in the field of epilepsy is aimed at better understanding and preventing 'sudden and unexpected death in epilepsy' (SUDEP), one of the most frequent causes of sudden death in young adults, in particular through the development of connected objects for detecting and characterising epileptic seizures. His research, which uses mobile health technologies, is being extended to other neurological diseases, in particular migraine. Finally, since 2018, he has been coordinating the development and deployment of clinical research platforms developed as part of the Human Brain Project, including the Medical Informatics Platform (MIP) and the Human Intracerebral EEG Platform (HIP).
