Background

Following his medical studies in Romania (Medical University of Iasi) and Germany (Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg i.Br.), Dr. Popa obtained a PhD in clinical neuroscience (University of Siena, Italy). He continued his career as a clinical researcher and coordinator of the neuromodulation platform at the Salpêtrière Hospital (Paris, France), period during which he also taught at Sorbonne Universities (2008-2014). He then joined the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIH, Bethesda, USA) between 2014-2018 and at the EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland) between 2018-2022 as a senior scientist. In 2022, he joined the DNC as a senior scientist and coordinates the implementation and data capture of an Innosuisse federal project that aims to modernize neurorehabilitation care in Switzerland. He also teaches at the University of Geneva.

His field of interest is non-invasive stimulation of the nervous system for the rehabilitation of motor disorders in patients with brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. He uses multimodal approaches combining neuromodulation techniques (transcranial magnetic stimulation and continuous, alternative or temporal interference electrical stimulation) combined with neuroimaging (by magnetic resonance or electroencephalography) and/or movement monitoring techniques (posturography, accelerometry, etc.)
